Francisco Hernández de Toledo Agave print
In the late 1500s, Francisco Hernández de Toledo led the first scientific expedition from the Old World to the New World. It was a team of scientists and artists, whose mission was to document the plants and the animals in the New World. The result of the expedition were a number of publications, including Rerum medicarum Novae Hispaniae thesaurus, from which this page is taken. There were three artists on the expedition: Baptized Antón, Baltazar Elías and Pedro Vázquez. We’d love to give credit where it’s due, but are unsure which of the three did these illustrations.
