Chacala, Jalisco, is one of the many drought-stricken communities in Mexico. The 350-ish residents of the town a couple hours south of Puerto Vallarta is known for making Raicilla — a cultural tradition that is at risk of disappearing without water. But the residents themselves are also at risk of disappearing. Water is everything. So when they asked for financial support to both dig a well to solve their immediate problem and also set up rain-harvest systems to ensure there’s not too much strain on the aquifer, SACRED was glad to go seek out that financial support — and grateful to find that support from our friends at 818 Tequila.
The community began working on the project in May and is nearing completion. The plan is to celebrate with a ribbon cutting at the well on Friday, October 10. If you’ve received the link to this event page, you’ve been invited to attend that celebration. Please let us know if you intend to attend so we can be sure to have enough food and drinks for all! And if you need help getting transportation to the town, let us know that and we’ll try to connect you with other attendees.
